Author & Bike/Ped Transportation Guru Mia Birk to Visit the Old Pueblo

Mia Birk, author of Joyride, former Bicycle Program Manager for the city of Portland, and current Principal and CEO of Alta Planning & Design is coming to Tucson!  Join us for a series of events hosted by LSA and learn more about Mia, bicycle and pedestrian planning, and how we can improve conditions in the Tucson region.

About Mia

Mia Birk is a bicycle and pedestrian planner and advocate with nearly twenty years of experience in transportation planning.  Early on, she served as Transportation Program Manager of the International Institute for Energy Conservation in Washington D.C.  This was followed by 6 years of serving as Portland, Oregon’s Bicycle Program Manager, during which Mia made significant contributions to shaping the bicycle-friendly city that Portland is today.  As of 1999, Mia has served as Principal and CEO of Alta Planning + Design – a design firm that specializes in planning for bikes, pedestrians, greenspace, and urban trails.

In 2010, Mia published Joyride: Pedaling Towards A Healthier Planet – an insightful, first hand account of her experiences during her tenure as Portland’s Bicycle Program Manager.

Friday, March 11th at Noon

Join Mia and your fellow Tucsonans for a leisurely bike ride through the Old Pueblo.  We’ll be looking at some of Tucson’s best bicycle facilities as well as some of its most challenging connections.  You don’t have to be an avid cyclist to participate – just bring your bike, your helmet, and be ready to have fun!

Directions: Meet at the fountain west of  Old Main at the University of Arizona at 11:45.  We’ll leave promptly at noon.

Friday, March 11th at 3:30pm in partnership with the University of Arizona School of Landscape Architecture & Planning, College of Architecture & Landscape Architecture

Ever wonder how Portland became so bike friendly?  Or how can we can get even more people riding in Tucson?   Join us for a free public lecture by Mia and hear about how Portland and other leading bike-friendly cities throughout the world are reshaping the way cities move.  This lecture will be co-hosted by the University of Arizona School of Landscape Architecture & Planning and will be followed by a short panel discussion with Tom Thivener, Tucson’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Program Manager, and Matthew Zoll, Pima County’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Program Manager.
