President of League of American Bicyclists, Andy Clarke, to speak at free, public forum in Tucson
May 16, 2011 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
“Pedaling Toward Platinum in the Tucson Region” forum
The Pima Association of Governments (PAG) Platinum Challenge Task Force will present a public forum at 3 p.m., May 16, by internationally renowned bicycle transportation advocate Andy Clarke titled “Pedaling Toward Platinum in the Tucson Region.” Clarke’s visit coincides with National Bike Month in May. Clarke, who is the executive director/president of the League of American Bicyclists, will honor the University of Arizona, which was recently recognized as a Bicycle Friendly University. Clarke also will discuss the benefits of being a bicycle friendly community including the health, economic and livability impacts. The forum will explore what improvements are needed to advance cycling conditions in the region. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
Clarke has successfully led efforts to create, interpret and implement the various transportation programs that are available to improve conditions for bicycling and walking. In addition to his strong policy background, Clarke has
managed a range of bicycle and pedestrian planning projects at the state and metropolitan levels and has worked extensively with state and local advocacy groups.
The Tucson and Eastern Pima County region is designated a “Gold” level bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. The region aspires to be a “Platinum” community and will submit a new application to the LAB in February 2012.
The LAB is the strongest Bicycle Advocacy Organization in the nation. Its mission is to “To promote bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and work through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America.” The LAB Bicycle Friendly Community Program provides assistance and recognizes communities that actively support bicycling. The forum is open to the public. Learn how Tucson and other leading bicycle friendly cities throughout the world are reshaping the way cities move and what the Tucson region can learn from it.
