Highlights from the Pop-Up Plaza

#GivingTuesday's Pop-Up Plaza and Bike-In movie was a blast! Using light-weight furniture and adding some activities and food to the block, we set the stage for 6th Avenue to become a plaza. And you brought it to life! (Check out photos from the day here.)

Thanks to the hundreds of people of all ages who visited the plaza over the course of the day to enjoy coffee, lunch, read, relax, exercise, or catch a movie. Together, you made it a very memorable day and helped support the local businesses in our neighborhood.

Congratulations to Lisa, the winner of the Pop-up Plaza Door Prize and thank you to the businesses who contributed to making the event possible: Exo Roast Co, Tap+Bottle, Miller's Surplus, Bhava Wellness, Let's Sweat, The Royal Room, Mister Car Wash, and Pedego Electric Bikes. We are so appreciative of your support and partnership!

More kids on bikes with Safe Routes to School back in session

After missing an entire academic year of Safe Routes to School programming in schools, it's been such a joy to return to in-person events and activities this Fall. In addition to continued Riders & Walkers presentations in 3rd grade classrooms, and dozens of Mobile Bike Repair clinics across the Tucson region, here are some highlights of school-specific activities:
  • Mission View Elementary launched a brand new after-school bike club. They met every Friday with about ten consistent participants learning how to ride their bike safely and gearing up to ride out in their neighborhood.
  • Ochoa Bike Club got back in full swing. With support from BICAS ride coordinators, youth have learned how to safely ride their bikes out in the community and taken several group rides to parks near JVYC (John Valenzuela Youth Center).
  • Los Amigos Walk & Roll Wednesdays picked right back up with a massive kick-off event. Building on years of momentum, faculty and families resumed several weekly Walking School Buses to help get kids to school safely. It kicked off with a big event in October and continued each week consistently averaging 100 participants each time around.
Plenty more is planned for the spring semester including two street mural projects! Thank you to City of Tucson Dept. of Transportation & Mobility and to Pima County for continuing to fund and support these programs!

Introducing the December Cyclovia Remix route: Hello Midtown!

November's Cyclovia Remix was full of good tunes + sweet connections. Together, we met up for a group ride and hosted a pop-up party in the park where we saw lots of bikes repaired, neighbors accessing community resources, and good engagement with the City around changes coming to 6th Ave.

This month, we visit our Hello Midtown! route from way back in April 2013. It connects midtown primarily along Blacklidge from Stone to Dodge and up to Brandi Fenton Park. Scroll down for details of our final Cyclovia Remix event for 2021—an easygoing ride on Blacklidge—and visit the community calendar to see the full line-up of events and activities happening in the area.

What is Cyclovia Remix? Safe group rides, pop-up parties with loads of community resources, partnering with local businesses and community organizations, connecting with City projects happening in your neighborhood, and family-friendly activities.

Now available: our 2021 Annual Report

July 2020-June 2021 was a period most people will probably never forget. The COVID-19 pandemic peaked, nationwide protests for racial justice took center stage, and locally, schools were mostly closed and in-person events canceled. And yet, connections were still made, stories shared, and conversations kept alive.

In this Annual Report, we are honored to share a story centering South Tucson residents in a vision for their streets and a snapshot of how that took shape one year along a continuum of programs, events, and conversations that have been happening there for many years.

Last month we commemorated World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims by drawing attention to the fact that we're in a national crisis with an estimated 42,060 traffic deaths in 2020. These traffic deaths are preventable and we need urgent action now from all of our lawmakers at the federal level. We sent out an advocacy action alert, sign up here if you'd like to receive timely updates.
