Popping up with purpose

Last month's pop-up parklet was a big success in demonstrating how important these spaces are around town. Thanks to all who stopped by for a visit!

Businesses need extended, safer outdoor spaces and people need a shady spot to sit without needing to necessarily make a purchase. Enter #streateries and #parklets. We're excited to be working with the city and local businesses to turn temporary solutions and policy into lasting community assets. Stay tuned!

Visit our Flickr account to see photos from the event. And scroll for more transportation action items and getting LSA team updates.

Bon voyage Ramzy!

Last month we said goodbye to all-star intern, Ramzy Bejjani (the guy on the bucket bike, above), who has been part of the LSA team for the past three years. Ramzy came to LSA via the Coverdell Peace Corps Fellow program at the UofA, and having served in Ethiopia prior to coming to Tucson, brought gifts of resourcefulness, levity, and adaptability.

While pursuing his Masters in Landscape Architecture, Ramzy brought many of those skills and assets to the organization, most recently leading the conversation around streateries and parklets, which his Masters Report also focused on. Chances are, you met him at a Mobile Bike Repair clinic, at one of our pop-up events, or talked to him as part of the Cyclovia Census. Ramzy has been an incredibly fun and easy person to work with and will be missed. Please join us in wishing him well as he heads to the Bay Area for the next chapter of his adventures in public space!

Meet the new Coordinators

We're very excited to welcome two new members to the LSA team: Patricia Schwartz joins us as our new Open Streets Coordinator and Sophia Gonzalez as our Communications Coordinator. Click on their photo to learn more about their backgrounds in Geography, favorite treats, and why they love Tucson so much.

Events

With 110+ heat, there won't be any events this June, keep the end of July open. There may be bikes, movies in the park, and summer treats involved.
Can't wait to see you!

Actions

Make your mark on 1st Avenue

As a project listed in the RTA, the City of Tucson is about to embark upon an overhaul of 1st Avenue and is seeking community input on what that should/could look and feel like. Of particular importance is the decision to expand it to a six-lane roadway vs. a modified four-lane roadway. The city has an extensive webpage with information about the project available. Click on the link below to learn more and please make sure to fill out the survey so that you can make sure 1st Avenue becomes what you need it to be for you and your family.

Guide the future of Bike Share in Tucson

It's hard to believe it was just 4 short years ago that Tucson finally launched its bike share program. Tugo Bike share has been a great community partner in making bikes more accessible to Tucsonans. We've seen so many first time riders or returners gain their confidence on these bikes. And now, they need your thoughts and support to continue their efforts.

Why Should
We Change Regional Transportation?

Tucson represents 1/10th of the vote in decisions around our region's transportation. "PAG and the RTA should think very carefully about whether a system that diminishes the voices of a majority of voters in our region is the best path forward" Important reminders from one community voice, Arlie Adkins.

Can Removing Highways Fix America’s Cities?

"Highways radically reshaped cities, destroying dense downtown neighborhoods, dividing many Black communities and increasing car dependence. Now some cities are looking to take them out. But reconnecting neighborhoods is more complicated than breaking them apart."

Through images and historical accounts, this article exposes the permanent destruction of communities caused by major roadways and digs into the question: what does their repair look like?
