Tucson's Complete Streets policy is one of the best: is it working?

Last month we were thrilled to receive the news that Tucson’s Complete Streets policy (adopted in 2019) was ranked among the best in the nation by Smart Growth America’s National Complete Streets Coalition. The Coalition had been ranking policies annually to showcase and highlight robust policies that can help guide and inspire other communities doing their own Complete Streets work, and to track the progress of the Complete Streets movement nationally.

It's been four years since Tucson's policy was adopted. Find out what concrete progress has been made in implementing complete streets, and what still needs to happen to truly complete Tucson's streets.

Transit to remain free in Tucson: here's what comes next

On May 9th Tucson Mayor & Council voted to extend the city’s fare-free transit system indefinitely. While the vote guarantees free transit through the end of 2023 it does not establish a permanent, dedicated funding source for transit service or improvements. There's still much to be done to achieve the vision of equitable, accessible and convenient public transportation in Tucson. In order to carve a pathway to that vision, we need to understand where we really are with current policy, and where we can go from here.

Actions + Opportunities

**URGENT**
Tell state leaders:
Let voters decide their transportation future!

Photo credit: Mike McKisson for AZ Luminaria

Local elected leaders, working with local residents, are well-suited to propose transportation options they think will work best for their communities and then leave it to the voters to decide. However, Maricopa County – the only county in Arizona that needs legislative approval and the governor’s signature to call an election – is awaiting legislative action.

After 500 meetings and feedback from more than 10,000 residents, Mayors and other elected leaders from 32 cities, towns, and tribes—representing more than four million voters—unanimously agreed on a multi-modal transportation plan. The plan includes transit, roads, and freeways, not only providing transportation options but also freedom of mobility. Without it, the region will see an exponential increase in gridlock, pollution and lost economic opportunity. And what happens (or doesn’t) in Maricopa County can have statewide impact.

Take action now and tell state leaders to let voters decide their transportation future. This is time sensitive: signatures must be collected by COB Friday, June 9th (tomorrow!)
Take action!

Business Partner Spotlight

Q&A with Bruce Bennett, TFS Outreach & Communications
This month we're proud to spotlight one of LSA's longstanding supporters and business partners, Technicians for Sustainability, a community-minded business dedicated to ensuring that Southern Arizona’s natural resources are used efficiently and with respect for present and future needs. Committed to practicing what they preach, they live with the systems they install, make fuel-efficient transportation choices, and whenever possible, do business with companies that hold values, standards, and ethics aligned with theirs.
Q: What is Technicians for Sustainability (TFS) and what you do?
A: TFS is a renewable energy company, specializing in solar energy and battery storage systems for residential and commercial customers in the Tucson area.

Q: What makes TFS different from other solar companies?
A: TFS is an employee-owned cooperative and registered B Corp, currently celebrating our 20th year in operation. We have worked to build long lasting relationships with our customers and local community through commitment to transparency, quality of work, and responsible operating practices; "walking our talk," as we like to say.

Q: Why do you—as a local business—support Living Streets Alliance? How does it connect with your work/vision/values?
A: TFS is proud to support LSA. Alternative transportation and creative commuting is widespread at TFS - organizationally and individually - in an effort to reduce our footprint; the work LSA does to improve the accessibility, safety, and resiliency of our city's connectivity has an impact felt daily.

Q: What are your values as an organization, and how do they show up in your daily practice?
A: Here's a graphic illustrating our values in action:
Does your business' vision align with ours?
