Just in: Tucson is the third deadliest metro area in the nation for people walking

According to Dangerous by Design 2024, a report just released from Smart Growth America, Tucson is the 3rd deadliest metro area in the US for pedestrian, an increase from 13th since their last report was released in 2022.

Tucson is part of a national trend in increased traffic deaths for people on foot. The data show that the increase is far outpacing growth in population and that those most at risk are American Indian and Alaska Native, and Black populations.

We got an NEA grant!

Living Streets Alliance is over the moon to announce that we were selected as one of 68 organizations to receive an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts! We can't wait to use this grant for block-painting parties, asphalt art quick builds, mini open streets events, and hosting Cyclovia Tucson in the 85705 ZIP Code over the next two yeard.

Another aspect we're really excited about is artist capacity building. What we mean by that is supporting more artists to facilitate quick build mural art projects in their own communities, transforming artists into storytellers who can uplift the histories and shared experiences of the people and places they live and serve.

Stay tuned for more details as these exciting projects come to fruition!

A warm shoutout to our partners on this grant the Bronx Park Neighborhood, Old Pascua Youth Art, Old Pascua Museum & Yaqui Culture Center, Art Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona, Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility, Amphi Neighborhood, the office of Ward 3 Council Member Kevin Dahl, and artists Mel Dominguez and Porter McDonald.

Webinar: People First Design & Development

Thursday, June 20th, 1 - 2:30 PM

When community engagement surrounding planning and development shifts away from informing and consulting with residents to collaborating with and deferring to residents, smart growth can truly happen.

This webinar is the third in the Arizona Smart Growth Series, hosted by our friends at Pinnacle Prevention. Throughout the series, they're sharing success stories and best practices that advance equitable development practices and help create thriving cities, towns, neighborhoods, and people.

During this webinar they'll discuss why “check the box” community engagement causes harm, inhibits creative and sustainable decision-making, stalls processes from moving forward, and ultimately fails to bring communities and neighborhoods what they really need and want. You'll hear from two panelists: Augie Gastelum, Interim Executive Director of RAIL CDC, and Sam Gomez, Founder & Executive Director of The Sagrado.

Where can you start? What approaches to community engagement work? And most importantly, how do we fix a broken system? Join the webinar to find out!

Mexico Made Safe Mobility a Human Right - Here's How Its Streets Can Become Safer

Mexico became the first nation to declare access to safe mobility a human right in 2020 and two years later passed the General Law of Mobility and Road Safety to protect people, reduce collisions and promote sustainable modes of travel. The rules of the road are changing, but not fast enough for everyone

Since 1935, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) has set national standards for street signs and road design, with major revisions every decade or so. The latest version runs to more than 1,000 pages. And while the MUTCD doesn't get much attention outside of transportation circles, it has a major impact.
