National streets guru, Angie Schmitt, coming to Tucson
If you're passionate about streets as public space and multi-modal transportation, chances are you're a big fan of Angie Schmitt. Angie is one of the country's best known writers and experts on the topic of sustainable transportation. She was the long-time national editor of Streetsblog (swoon!) and her writing and commentary have appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, and National Public Radio. She's also the founder and principal at 3MPH Planning & Consulting, a small firm focused on pedestrian safety, and the author of Right of Way: Race, Class and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America, which was published in 2020 by Island Press.
Angie works with leading change makers around the country advancing safer transportation policies and infrastructure and we're excited to share that she'll be here in Tucson (and in Phoenix) for a free event organized by Arizona Partnership for Healthy Communities. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to meet Angie and hear her latest ideas and reflections on the state of safety for people biking, walking, rolling, and taking transit in America. Introducing Cyclovita: our new mini-open streets concept
One of the number one requests we receive as organizers of Cyclovia Tucson is: Can you do it more often? and the second most frequent request is: Can you bring it to my neighborhood?
Big open streets events like Cyclovia Tucson take a huge amount of resources and capacity to organize and while we love them, they're hard to scale up. Enter Cyclovita. We've long had the dream to pilot a smaller open streets event—something that neighborhoods could take the lead on organizing themselves. And now, thanks to AARP's Community Challenge and the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town program, we're about to finally be able to try it out!
Next month Amphi neighborhood will host the first Cyclovita along four blocks of car-free streets with a winter market at one end and a resource fair at the other. Cyclovitas are meant to be hyperlocal, so if you're from the neighborhood or the general area (nearby neighborhoods) we invite you to check it out. Learn more by clicking below. Joyful streets filled with people during our 21st Cycovia Tucson event
On Sunday, October 27th we hosted our 21st Cyclovia Tucson event presented by Arizona Complete Health, spanning from Mission View Elementary School in South Tucson to Armory Park in downtown Tucson along a route connecting communities that are close in physical proximity but distinctly different in demographics, histories, and culture.
After months of community outreach, partnerships, and planning, the 21st Cyclovia Tucson emerged as a celebration in honor of health, heritage, and community connection. Click below for highlights from the day and thank to to everyone who joined in the fun!

Tell National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: make vehicle hoods safer for pedestrians!
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working on a new safety standard (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) that would require designs of vehicle hoods to be less deadly to pedestrians. Unfortunately, other design flaws that could save lives, such as front end height, visibility issues and speed governance, are currently not included in the safety requirements.
America Walks is advocating for NHTSA to take more meaningful steps to improve safety and require additional safety standards. The organization will encourage NHTSA to finalize new hood standards, as well as add new rules to address dangerous vehicle size, visibility, and speed.

Cash Lansky and 29th Street Thrive: Hip Hop artist gives back through creative civic engagement
Cash Lansky and his work were recently featured on Arizona Illustrated. Cash worked with us as a Promotore for the City of Tucson's 29th Street Thrive Project, organizing events to gather community-led research. This new and creative approach to civic engagement ensures that solutions are tailored to the unique needs of the neighborhood, often uncovering overlooked perspectives that top-down research misses, and promises to aid people in shaping their neighborhoods with newfound agency and insight.
