LSA and Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility awarded Bloomberg Philanthropies' Ashphalt Art Intiative grant
Last month, Tucson was selected as one of 26 U.S. cities to receive a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Their Asphalt Art Initiative provides cities with grants of up to $25,000, as well as technical support for projects that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities. Living Streets Alliance and Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility proposed the biggest asphalt art project yet in Tucson's history. School's back in session and Safe Routes kicks into gear
Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it easier for youth and families to walk and bike to and from school. Since 2014 we've had the honor of coordinating Safe Routes to School programs on behalf of both the City of Tucson and the City of South Tucson, working to make it fun, safe, and easy for more youth (K-8) to get out on foot and on bike. This includes:
- mobile bike repairs;
- after-school bike clubs;
- in-classroom curriculum;
- walking school buses + bike trains;
- safe routes mapping;
- customized events and activities, and more.
After almost 18 months, schools are finally back in session and their bicycling and walking programs are in full swing. Working with our partners at BICAS, Jessica Estrada, our new Safe Routes Coordinator, has been busy coordinating with schools, teacher leads, parents, and hundreds of students to get after-school bike clubs going again at Pueblo Gardens Elementary, John Valenzuela Youth Center, and to launch a brand new one with Mission View Elementary. Los Amigos Tech Academy launched its popular Fitness Fridays this week, just in time for Walk 'N' Roll to School week, graciously hosted by Pima County Department of Environmental Quality this year to promote active ways to get to school, such as walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding, or rollerblading.
Learn more about our Safe Routes approach and contact us to get your school, community or neighborhood involved.

Take your community project idea to the next level
|
|
We hear frequently from neighborhoods or communities looking to take action to reclaim their streets as public spaces, and here's a great resource to help make that happen. The Live Well Arizona Incubator is designed to help communities build their capacity in equitable, place based work by providing an experienced coach and a variety of resources for 10 months. At the end of the process, the team will be in a position to take the next steps in addressing the community issue.
The deadline to apply is October 15th. Please share this opportunity with people you know and find more info on their website.

Chime in on our region's bicycle-friendliness
|
|
Every couple of years, our region applies for Bicycle Friendly status from the League of American Bicyclists. This is national ranking to help benchmark our collective efforts toward becoming a safe and welcoming place for people to bike. Now is the time to share your thoughts on the Tucson region's bicycle infrastructure and culture. Help evaluate how well we're doing by taking a quick survey. Responses are due next week!

Streets As Parks
|
|
Now known as the “Great Walkway,” the four-lane, oceanside boulevard has attracted an average 3,200 daily visitors since it was first shuttered to drivers in April 2020, quickly becoming the second-most-popular park in the city.

A Quick Deep Dive on Transportation Divides
|
|
Conservatives are more misinformed about key transportation issues — but liberals aren’t much better. Transportation leaders have known about induced demand for nearly a century, but most members of the American public haven’t gotten the memo. So where's the disconnect?
