Press Release: Sneak Preview of Cyclovia this April

Tucson, AZ (March 22, 2023) – Living Streets Alliance invites the public to enjoy a car-free, carefree day on the Spring 2023 Cyclovia Tucson route. Several miles of city streets will be open to one-and-all to walk, roll, bike, and play at this free event on Sunday, April 16 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Neighborhoods, community organizations, local businesses and event sponsors will host activities all along the route for a full and energizing day. Games, food trucks, music, performances, giveaways, and much more await you at Arizona’s biggest biannual block party. The event’s exciting happenings are grouped into Activity Hubs: cruise the entire route and you’ll hit all four!

Here’s a preview of the day:

Lost Barrio Hub

The Lost Barrio Historic Shopping District hosts the westernmost Cyclovia Hub. Get some home decor inspiration from specialty shops like La Casa Mexicana Interiors, Rústica, The Little Little Shop, Gather Vintage Market, and Southwest Furniture and Kitchen Design, who will remain open during the event. Visit the Let’s Sweat pop-up for a fun mini-exercise class, or relax on the newly reopened Tooley’s Cafe patio or in Cigna’s cool-down lounge. Paint your own pet rock with the Highland Free School and explore family-friendly activities while local DJs from KXCI Community Radio provide a live soundtrack.

Living Streets Alliance (LSA) presents Cyclovia Tucson to invite people to experience their streets in a new way: as car-free, carefree, living public spaces. Tucson’s streets hold unique stories, connecting us to places and each other. Cyclovia amplifies these connections by supporting local businesses, highlighting vibrant spaces that create community year-round, and sharing stories from neighborhood leaders, residents and organizations. Learn more about Living Streets Alliance and Cyclovia when you visit the LSA Hospitality Tent in the Lost Barrio Hub. Grab some fresh Cyclovia merch and pick up a Cinco for Cyclovia bingo game card while you’re there!

After exploring the route, take a break in the Beer Garden on South Park Avenue to enjoy a refreshing brew or sparkling water, with pours provided by Dragoon Brewing Company and Pueblo Vida Brewing Company. Proceeds benefit LSA’s year-round advocacy in support of vibrant and complete streets throughout the city. Plus, you’ll get a great view of the high-flying Genuine BMX riders.

Miles Hub

The Miles neighborhood holds a family-friendly Hub where the hosts, Miles Exploratory Learning Center, invite you to learn a little bit of American Sign Language, get active with games on the school field, and engage in fun other activities. Visit the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality Clean Air Program booth to learn more about ways to cut down on emissions and be a part of the Youth for Blue Skies community story corps project. The Pima County Health Department’s Tardeada de Salud is the place to go for health resources including flu shots and vaccines, take-home test kits, referrals and fun giveaways including free food. The Health Department’s REACH, Vaccine Equity, Health Disparities, and other teams will provide wraparound services and a fun, festival atmosphere.

Rincon Heights Neighborhood Hub

Rincon Heights residents are hosting a neighborhood Hub where you can celebrate music, art and community. Come appreciate one of the most architecturally diverse neighborhoods in Tucson and see how communities on the Cyclovia route can showcase their streets to make the event their own. In addition to live music and delicious food trucks at this Hub, El Rio Health will have a chalk obstacle course, kid's games, fitness class demos and lots of bubbles! Fill up your bottle at the Tucson Water Hydration Station, and learn more about rainwater harvesting with Storm to Shade. Don’t miss the Heritage Market, presented by the Tucson Urban League, where you can celebrate, support, and shop from local Black businesses and food vendors.

Ha:sañ Preparatory & Leadership School will open up their campus off of Highland Ave to the public. Visit to learn more about this high school's courses in Tohono O’odham language, tradition and history, and get some delicious fry bread to support student funds!

Himmel Park Hub

Great music, games and more can be found at the lively Himmel Park Hub, the eastern end of the route. Groups that regularly use this much-loved midtown greenspace will help activate the East side of the park during Cyclovia. Challenge your friends to giant lawn games from Ready, Set, Rec!, or try your hand at bean bag toss to win prizes with Tucson Old Pueblo Credit Union. Take home a new read from the Pima County Public Library Book Bike, and celebrate independent queer and feminist publishing with the Outspokin’ & Bookish Zine bike! Visit AARP Arizona to pick up some swag and get involved with community events and advocacy; AARP members can enter for a chance to win a new bike!

The Banner-University Medicine Health Zone at Himmel Park will feature fun give-away items, valuable community health care resources and a make your own smoothie blender bike.

Walking Routes

The entire Cyclovia route is open for all modes of self-powered movement, including walking! If you’re looking to walk the route and only have time for a shorter portion, we suggest the section between Himmel Park and the Miles Hub. Several groups will be doing group walks in this area with a little more shade and plenty of sidewalks. Why not organize a group walk of your own?

All Activity Hubs will feature live performances or local DJs, food trucks, activities, games, and free bike repair from local bike shops including BICAS, Roadrunner Bicycles and Campfire Cycling. Several local groups will be performing at surprise locations to bring music and life to every section of the route. Stop by any of four route Information Booths to pick up a ‘Cinco for Cyclovia’ scavenger hunt game card or a free youth bike helmet. Info Booths are also the place to get directions, refill your water bottle, and find a water bowl for your four-legged Cyclovista! You can pull up the searchable route map on your smartphone via the Cyclovia website to find food trucks, restrooms, entertainment, and activities on-the-go.

Want to try exploring the route on two wheels? Tugo Bike Share bikes will be available free of charge during the event at the Lost Barrio and Himmel Park stations at the East and West ends of the route!

Cyclovia Tucson is still seeking volunteers. Sign up for a three-hour shift at www.cycloviatucson.org/ volunteer to enjoy a day outdoors and do your part to support the Open Streets movement in Tucson. There are lots of opportunities to earn service hours, enjoy some team-building with your group, and meet new people—plus all volunteers get a Cyclovia t-shirt!
