City and community-preferred proposed "complete street" cross section for 1st Avenue
[Baby] steps in the right direction as RTA Next edges closer
As the RTA wraps up its first 20-year transportation investment plan and works to build the next plan (RTA Next) to go before voters, LSA is among many in the region who have had concerns about transparency within the organization and management of the plans. After years of frustration, last month's meeting of the RTA Board produced some positive legal actions for the completion of current RTA projects, as well as the development of RTA Next. Both were critical to furthering Tucsonans' vision for an equitable and climate-resilient transportation future.

What would a more walkable 5th/6th Street look like?
Over the years, we've received numerous emails and phone calls from people who live near 5th/6th Street about the challenges they face when walking across or along this urban corridor. We once spoke with a neighbor who lived right on 6th about the many fatal crashes that occurred near her home. She described crossing this street as a "death defying act" and shared that she would "love to make this area safe for pedestrians as well as cars," while adding that she would like to see a center turn lane.
There are now two funded projects that present an opportunity to make 5th/6th Street a safer, more comfortable and more inviting place for walking. Even though we're not as close as we'd like to fulfilling the decade-old wishes of that neighbor on 6th Street (yet), one of the projects may involve implementing a road diet and adding a center turn lane on a section of 5th Street.

Q&A with Devon Underwood,
Principal & Founder of the Talent Store
Q: Tell us a little bit about The Talent Store and what you do.
A: We're a boutique recruiting and advising firm and offer Executive Search, Key Position placement, bulk recruiting through our RPO, and Talent Strategy Advising. Through our recruitment and talent strategy advising work, we help our clients’ companies and teams grow and thrive. Through our community work and partnerships, we want to help Tucson progress and thrive by supporting innovation, inclusion, climate stewardship, and safe, equitable transportation.
Q: What kinds of clients are you working with at the moment and what do they do?
A: Our clients are doing incredible work throughout the Southwest, from data analytics to help solve water resources issues, to a solar technology company bringing power to off-grid areas, to the expansion of arts and culture through our own Fox Theatre, and everything in between. The common connector is the commitment to IMPACT and the understanding that lifting others lifts us.
Q: Why do you support LSA? How does it connect to your work?
A: I rarely hear the business case for what Living Streets Alliance advocates for, but it’s so clear to me! A talented workforce is an incredible competitive edge for any organization and the pillars of LSA support our ability to attract and retain talent locally. More safe and equitable transportation opens up commuting and employment/employee options, community and commuting space for people (not just cars) creates connection and lifestyle options the modern workforce prioritizes when choosing where to live, and a focus on climate stewardship helps us to be innovative and sustainable in our infrastructure plans as well as prioritize keeping more people in our community healthy and safe. I’m proud to be a Board Member and ambassador for the work they are doing and invite anyone to join us in whatever capacity they can.
