Cyclovia was a HIT!

A thousand memories were made when we took to the streets on Sunday, April 6th. The beloved Treat Avenue Bike Boulevard became home to the dancing, feasting, playing, spinning and traversing of open streets from 9am-3pm. It was an exceptional day. Thank you for celebrating the possibilities of our biggest public space with one another. We've put together a photo essay recounting the highlights and beauty of the day.

Thank you to all who celebrated Arizona Gives Day with us!

The wind gave us a warm reprieve on the evening of Tuesday, April 1st, where we celebrated recent and future transit wins within the spirited confines of Westbound's patio space. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to Living Streets Alliance as part of our Arizona Gives Day. Together, we met and exceeded our goal of raising $20,000 in support of streets for people here in Tucson. Huge thanks to Westbound for hosting the happy hour and to the dozens of people who attended. You helped pack the space with warmth, enthusiasm, and joy. The road to safe and vibrant streets is long, but we're here for it. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

LSA Board of Directors welcomes new member: Alejandra Baltazar-Carlat

Earlier this year the Living Streets Alliance Board welcomed its newest member, Alejandra Baltazar-Carlat. Alejandra is the Director of the John Valenzuela Youth Center in South Tucson, who we've partnered with in various capacities for over a decade, including the Ochoa Bike Club—an after school program that gets kids from the center on bikes.

Fourteen diverse individuals currently make up LSA's Board of Directors. Meet Alejandra and the rest of the Board by clicking below.

Help reform an outdated '80s relic: Tucson's Major Streets & Routes Plan

If you've ever wondered why certain buildings are set back so far from the street on our major roadways, there's an ancient planning document that's likely to blame: the Major Streets & Routes Plan (MS&R). The MS&R Map & Plan was created back in 1982 and is still used to identify major streets, guide future street improvements, and establish zoning setbacks from the right-of-way width to accommodate for roadway uses without the demolition or acquisition of adjacent property. It's a very problematic document, often at odds with Tucson's Complete Streets policy and other goals for making our streets safer and more people-centered.

Thankfully, the City is looking to make some major updates to it, and that's where you come in. Click on the link below to learn more about the MS&R via a helpful storymap. Then, make sure to participate in their survey. You can also attend a presentation about the update at an upcoming event:

Weigh in on multiple Bicycle Boulevards: Sahuara/Copper-Flower & Miramonte

The City of Tucson is planning two new bicycle boulevard projects: Sahuara Bicycle Boulevard, which extends about 4.9 miles from Glenn Street to Golf Links Road, and Copper-Flower Bicycle Boulevard which extends about 5.9 miles from Fairview Avenue to Swan Road. (That's almost 11 miles of new Bicycle Boulevard—hooray!!!) The Sahuara and Copper-Flower Bicycle Boulevard projects use low volume neighborhood streets to expand our citywide low-stress biking network by creating east/west and north/south routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks.

Design and refinement of the Camino Miramonte - Palo Verde Bicycle Boulevard continues. If you didn't get a chance to attend one of the pop-up events last week, make sure to visit the project web page and weigh in with your support and suggestions:

Help study Tucson’s fossil fuel emissions by counting traffic

Did you know that we can identify fossil fuel emissions in the air by sampling annual plants and counting cars? Knowing where greenhouse gases are and at what concentrations can help policymakers fight climate change.

This spring, our friends at Sky Island Alliance are partnering to measure fossil fuel levels in Arizona’s three biggest cities. They need volunteers to help sample different places around Tucson to understand which areas have the highest emissions.
