Reflections from the first National Week Without Driving
Last week we invited Tucsonans from all walks of life - including our elected officials - to join us in participating in the first National Week Without Driving - an event organized by a coalition of partners including America Walks and Disability Mobility Initiative. Dozens of people signed our pledge, and we at LSA have been moved and motivated by the stories we have collected so far.

Amphi Neighborhood supported by a Resource Fair as part of our 20th Cyclovia outreach
Amphi, a neighborhood in North Tucson, is among the most diverse places in Tucson, and indeed the Nation, with 32 languages spoken there! The LSA - Literacy Connects Resource Fair, hosted in collaboration with Amphi neighbors, Tucson Ward III council office, International Rescue Committee, and Tucson Refugee Ministry turned out to be a moving and joyful community event that drew around 200 attendees, including 50 children (and even six puppies) to celebrate community and connect with direct services and tangible resources.

Block Party celebrates seven years of Safe Routes to School in Pueblo Gardens
This month, after a years long wait necessitated by the COVID pandemic, we returned to the streets of the Pueblo Gardens neighborhood with plants, paint, brushes, and a community-based vision of positive change - seven years after the very first “asphalt art” project that we implemented in Tucson came to life at Pueblo Gardens Elementary School.
On Saturday, September 30th, 2023, we gathered with Pueblo Gardens residents, the School’s Principal, teachers, staff and students, to transform a school-area intersection with a beautiful asphalt mural, to complement the freshly-installed curb-extensions, the new crosswalk and curb ramps as was envisioned in the Pueblo Gardens Safe Routes to School Travel Plan. Click below to see highlights and photos from the day.

LSA welcomes Madeline McClure to the team!
Madeline (she/her) joins the LSA team as our new Operations Manager, bringing over ten years of nonprofit experience to this important role. The values Madeline carries have been shaped by experiences in immigration rights, racial justice, popular education, and crisis counseling. As a rider of bikes, motorcycles, and frequent walker of dogs, Mads (as she is known to her friends) values the safety and creative potential of Tucson’s streets. Also a lover of language, Madeline teaches community ESL and Spanish courses, and on her free time enjoys writing poetry, plays, and short fiction. We feel very fortunate to have Mads helping out with our 20th Cyclovia Tucson and getting us ready to start 2024 on solid footing. Welcome Mads!

Learn about the 36th & Campbell Roundabout
LSA is supporting the City of Tucson Transportation and Mobility Department (DTM) to make our streets better places for walking, biking, and rolling as part of voter-approved Proposition 407 projects. Community engagement activities are scheduled next month to inform the 36 Street Pedestrian Safety and Walkability project; a roundabout is proposed at the intersection of 36th Street and Campbell Avenue, and the DTM project team would like to hear from people who live or travel in the area.
If you live in Pueblo Gardens, Las Vistas, Western Hills, and South Park neighborhoods, we specially invite you to come and learn more about the proposed roundabout, and to share your thoughts with the project team.
