Pueblo Gardens - Seven Years of Safe Routes to School & Community Building

This month we’ll be returning to the streets of the Pueblo Gardens Neighborhood with cans of paint and brushes - seven years after the very first “asphalt art” project that we implemented in Tucson came to life right next to the Pueblo Gardens school! Our initial introduction to the Pueblo Gardens neighborhood was back in 2015 through a CDC-funded grant that explored perceptions of walkability in Tucson’s predominantly Mexican-American neighborhoods...

After-school bike clubs are back!

Kids are back in school, and our Safe Routes to School program is supporting three after-school bike clubs, all of which kick off at the end of September. These bike clubs support students in learning safe-riding skills with the goal of empowering them to safely ride to school and elsewhere on their own. They're also opportunities to get to know their barrio, connect with peers and staff, and get in some crucial exercise. By focusing on skill-building activities that take place on school grounds, we make sure kids start out with the basics and that all students feel confident no matter where they're starting from.
  • Mission View Elementary will be starting their third year of Bike Club with weekly meetings and more than 15 student participants.
  • The John Valenzuela Youth Center hosts many of the Ochoa Community School students for fun afterschool activities and bike club is one of them! BICAS Youth Education Leaders are our partners in leading the Ochoa/JVYC bike club.
  • Pueblo Gardens K-8 hosts a middle school bike club with support from school staff.
Safe Routes to School programming is made possible in part with support from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility, and by a Pima County Community Development Block Grant.

A Week Without Driving challenges participants to learn about transportation inequity firsthand and better understand the many barriers faced by non-drivers in our communities - elevating the voices of the 1/3 of Americans who are without a car or otherwise unable to drive.

Next month LSA is joining advocates from across the country by encouraging Tucson’s participation in the first-ever National Week Without Driving (NWWD), and YOU can be part of it!

As the event name implies, the idea is to go without driving for one week and to pay close attention to how your mobility is limited as a result. We especially encourage our local elected leaders to participate - sending a message that they care about the more than 100 million people, including their many regional constituents, who need policies and infrastructure that support driving alternatives.

Could YOU go a #WeekWithoutDriving in Tucson?

How to participate:

  1. Take the LSA Pledge (Button below)
  2. Share your NWWD or everyday non-driver experience and observations with us. (A form will be emailed to you when you take the pledge, or you can email observations, images, or videos to info@livingstreetsalliance.org)
  3. Share your experience on social media throughout the week using the #WeekWithoutDriving hashtag, and share this event with your friends and family.
Week Without Driving is an opportunity to learn, first-hand, about the mobility experiences and barriers faced by non-drivers whose car-free status is grounded in necessity - not by choice. Join us, and put yourself in someone else's shoes for the week, or a portion of it!

These will create a total of four, interconnected Bicycle Boulevards along low-volume neighborhood streets, supported by traffic calming measures such as speed humps, traffic circles, push-button crossings, sustainable landscaping, and reduced speed limits. If you walk, bike, roll, or live in any of these project areas on the West side, we invite you to come out, learn more about the proposed improvements, and to share your thoughts with the City of Tucson project team!

What are your thoughts about zebras on the road?

The Department of Transportation & Mobility is undertaking an evaluation of the Zicla Zebras - piloted on Main Ave between the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Speedway Blvd. As part of the evaluation, they have put together a community survey to get a better sense of user experience. If you have used Main Ave in the last year, please take the short survey linked below.

The evaluation will help the City of Tucson and collaborators determine if this is an effective treatment for use in the future for implementing protected bike lanes.

Getting ready for National Week Without Driving

Take a look at these powerful 3-minute digital stories created by Tucsonans who shared their experiences of transportation barriers while they navigate the city without a car. We hope that these videos help you start thinking about mobility barriers people face in our community due to deficiencies in our infrastructure and transportation systems. We look forward to hearing your reflections as you participate in NWWD and encourage you to send photos and videos we can share as part of our National Week Without Driving social media campaign!

What is it like to navigate a city as senior and non-driver?
