Hundreds of activities at Cyclovia, here’s what’s featured

Tucson, AZ (March 22, 2022) – Living Streets Alliance invites the public back outside for the return of Cyclovia Tucson, a five-mile block party. Car-free streets are open to attendees to walk, roll, bike, and play on the route connecting Downtown Tucson and the City of South Tucson. People of all ages and abilities are invited to this free event Sunday, March 27th from 9am to 3pm. 

During Cyclovia Tucson neighbors and community organizations set up activities all along the route to contribute to a full, dynamic day. Community partners bring games, giveaways, and good times for you and your friends and family to enjoy during this one-day event. With so many things to do, activities are grouped at Activity Hubs which you can explore on the interactive map app.cyclovia.org/map. Here’s a preview of the day:

Banner–University Medicine Hub at Jácome Plaza (Stone Ave & Alameda St)

As BMX bike riders freestyle through the air, KXCI will provide energetic, eclectic tunes. Run through a giant inflatable obstacle course while you recharge your phone at the COMMON Workspace charging station. Tucson Roadrunners will have an inflatable slap shot activity and selfies with the Roadrunners mascot. Check out wheelchair basketball and try out a handcycle with Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports, or take Salsa or Zumba dance lessons led by different groups including El Rio Health, YMCA, and Ritmos Latinos. Banner–University Medicine will host a health fair and give away bike pumps. If you live, work or use Church Avenue for your commute, chat with folks from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility about upcoming changes to the street. Learn more about Prop 411 and try out a temporary protected bike lane while you're at it. ASU Office of Community Health, Engagement and Resiliency (OCHER) hosts a wild game of freeze dance to learn more about your heart rate, breathing and other sensations to track calming sensations and other ways to self-regulate the nervous system. 

Living Streets Alliance at The Downtown Clifton (Stone Ave & 16th St)

Living Streets Alliance (LSA) hosts Cyclovia semi-annually to invite people to experience their streets in a new way, as car-free and care-free public spaces. Streets create a sense of place within communities and connect people to places and each other. Cyclovia amplifies the unique places in Tucson by supporting local businesses, highlighting vibrant places and spaces that create community year-round, and learning more about neighborhoods from established community leaders, neighbors, and organizations. 

Learn more about Living Streets Alliance and Cyclovia when you visit the LSA Hospitality Tent. Grab the newest Cyclovia t-shirt design, hot off the press. Cool off with a refreshing brew at the beer garden at The Downtown Clifton, with pours provided by Dragoon Brewing Company and frosés from Sand Reckoner. Proceeds go to LSA. Participate in or watch local skaters pull off cool tricks at the Tucson Skatepark Alliance ramp setup in the middle of the street–includes a few kicker ramps, fun boxes, and rails. At the Cigna lounge, come chill out for a little bit with more giveaways and games. 

Drachman Montessori Hub (Meyer Ave & 21st St)

This eco-conscious hub includes Tucson Water’s monsoon storm tunnel and water refill station. Resident artist Alex Jimenez! will lead an interactive art project and Drachman Montessori will host kid’s gardening activities and giveaways. Watershed Management Group will teach water harvesting tips, and Saguaro National Park’s mascot Sunny Saguaro will empower neighbors with tips on how to get outside and enjoy the desert. Make sure to bring nice clothes you don’t love anymore for Cero’s zero-waste clothing swap. If you bring a bicycle to Cyclovia, practice getting your bike on and off a parked Sun Tran bus rack in a low-pressure situation. 

Technicians for Sustainability will have solar panel ping-pong and a drink station. Epic Rides will give away free cycling/outdoor products such as sunscreen, lip balm, bike lube, tire sealant, cycling shirts, and water bottles. Tucson’s Green Stormwater Infrastructure program will be making seed bombs for kids to take home. Tucson Unified School District will be there to provide information and enroll students into the 2022-2023 school year. 

Santa Rita Park Hub (4th Ave & 22nd St)

Tucson Parks and Recreation Department’s Ready, Set, Rec! vans activate this park with enormous lawn games, hula hoops, and sports equipment. Pima County’s REACH program will host a ‘Tardeada de Salud’ resource hub including dancing, music, and COVID-19 education, testing, and vaccines. The Pima County Health Department will pass out coloring books to use when it’s time to rest in the shade. Visit the International Rescue Committee to learn about refugees in our community. 

Ochoa Community School Hub (8th Ave & 25th St)

It’s a monster mash at the BICAS Mutant Bicycle Obstacle Course. Race your friends or create recycled bike art. Try a new language with others at the International Language Swap through games, casual conversation, and activities–all languages and levels welcome. The Sam Lena Library Book Bike will give away books, Ochoa Community School will help you get your students enrolled for the 2022-2023 school year, and Ochoa’s Ecology Club will host a make-your-own-wildflower seed packet to take home or spread somewhere in your neighborhood. Enjoy some shade and sweet paletas for $1, and all proceeds go to their Optimist Club which helps buy supplies and fund activities for Ochoa students. Natural Grocers will give away water, samples, and reusable bags.

Galeria Mitotera and Avenidas Hub (4th Ave & 28th St)

Galeria Mitotera hosts its regular community pop-up at Cyclovia inclusive of live, interactive art projects with Melo Dominguez, music, food, and free giveaways. Check out the slow and lowriders from the Sophisticated Few Car Club. While teaching the public about our important pollinators, Arizona Conservation Corps will show attendees how to make native seed balls from the Sonoran Desert to welcome in the rains. 

PDEQ on the Move at Mission View (8th Ave & 36th St)

Pima County Department of Environmental Quality Clean Air Program partners with Living Streets Alliance to encourage a car-lite lifestyle. Don’t miss out on their bike and scooter raffles. Artist Arte Rosas will lead a live mural-painting along 8th Avenue. Mission View Elementary will also have music, mariachis, and popsicles. If you’re passionate about advocating for youth, talk to CASA, Pima County Court Appointed Special Advocates, and sign up for their volunteer program. The Center for Neurosciences Foundation brings their interactive Brain Bus to build concussion awareness with activities like putt-putt golf while wearing concussion goggles. Project Bike Club will bring bikes and equipment to set up obstacle courses and teach mechanics lessons.

All Activity Hubs will have live music or local DJs, food trucks, activities, games, and free bike repair from local bike shops including REI, TREK, Roadrunner Bicycles, Campfire Cycling, and BICAS Fix-a-Flat. 

Stop by any of five information booths to get directions and refill your water bottle with Sparkletts water. Also pick up a ‘Cinco for Cyclovia’ scavenger hunt game card, a free youth bike helmet, facemask, and dog treats for your four-legged Cyclovista.

Alternatively, you can use the Cyclovia interactive, searchable map on the website from your smartphone to find food trucks, restrooms, entertainment, and activities on-the-go.
