Tucson Receives Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative Grant Award
Living Streets Alliance is excited to share some great news for Tucson about the next big, colorful, street transformation taking shape. Read below for our official joint press release with the City of Tucson.
(October 5th, 2021) Tucson, AZ — The Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced Tucson as one of 26 U.S. cities selected to receive a grant as part of their Asphalt Art Initiative. The Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative provides cities with grants of up to $25,000, as well as technical support for projects that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities.
The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), working in partnership with local nonprofit organization, Living Streets Alliance, will use grant funding to enhance Sixth Avenue from 12th Street to 13th Street in downtown Tucson. The project will consist of three consecutive street murals occupying approximately 13,000 square feet of roadway space. The designs will enhance safety for people on foot and on bike, improve public spaces, and reinforce connections between Children’s Museum Tucson, Armory Park Senior Center, and neighboring businesses and residents..
"My gratitude goes to Bloomberg Philanthropies for selecting the City of Tucson as a recipient of the Asphalt Art Initiative grant award,” said Mayor Regina Romero. “Creating murals and art-enhanced crosswalks in front of the Children’s Museum will add beauty, improve visibility, and contribute to the distinct sense of place at the heart of the Armory Park neighborhood. This community-driven project will make the entire block an even more vibrant destination for Tucsonans and tourists alike, while slowing down vehicle traffic and improving safety for people walking, biking, and using other modes of transportation.”
The project team will begin with initial community engagement in the coming months followed by the installation of the asphalt art project in late 2022. The murals will be installed via a community block-painting party allowing volunteers, neighborhood residents, and community partners to transform the street together.
“This collaboration is the perfect opportunity to integrate the arts and DTM’s expertise to bring beauty, awareness, and joy to a [street] space that so many use everyday,” says Emily Yetman, Executive Director of Living Streets Alliance. The two organizations worked together previously to transform the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street, just north of downtown Tucson, using paint, planters, and flex posts. “We can’t wait to see the energy created through that project extend south to an area where so many Tucsonans already gather for festivals, demonstrations, concerts, and special events. It really is the heart of Tucson.”
LA CIUDAD DE TUCSON RECIBE EL PREMIO DE SUBVENCIÓN A LA INICIATIVA DE ARTE DE ASFALTO DE BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES
Bloomberg Philanthropies ha anunciado a Tucson como una de las 26 ciudades de EE. UU. Seleccionadas para recibir una subvención como parte de su Iniciativa de arte de asfalto. La iniciativa de arte de asfalto de Bloomberg Philanthropies brinda a las ciudades subvenciones de hasta $ 25,000, así como apoyo técnico para proyectos que utilizan arte y diseño para mejorar la seguridad en las calles, revitalizar los espacios públicos e involucrar a los residentes de sus comunidades.
El Departamento de Transporte y Movilidad de Tucson (DTM), en colaboración con la organización local sin fines de lucro Living Streets Alliance, utilizará fondos de subvenciones para mejorar la Sexta Avenida desde la Calle 12 hasta la Calle 13 en el centro de Tucson. El proyecto consistirá en tres murales callejeros consecutivos que ocuparán aproximadamente 13,000 pies cuadrados de espacio vial. Los diseños mejorarán la seguridad de las personas a pie y en bicicleta, mejorarán los espacios públicos y reforzarán las conexiones entre el Museo Infantil de Tucson, el Armory Park Senior Center y las empresas y residentes vecinos.

El equipo del proyecto comenzará con la participación inicial de la comunidad en los próximos meses, seguido de la instalación del proyecto de arte de asfalto a fines de 2022. Los murales se instalarán a través de una fiesta comunitaria de pintura de bloques que permitirá a los voluntarios, los residentes del vecindario y los socios comunitarios transformar el calle juntos.
“Esta colaboración es la oportunidad perfecta para integrar las artes y la experiencia de DTM para llevar belleza, conciencia y alegría a un espacio [callejero] que muchos usan todos los días”, dice Emily Yetman, directora ejecutiva de Living Streets Alliance.
