Starting with ice cream, changing traditional community engagement
As part of implementing voter-approved Proposition 407 projects, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility teams up with Living Streets Alliance to help broaden avenues of engagement. Non-traditional community engagement asks:
- Who or what is centered in the approach?
- Where does “what would you like to see in this project" stop short?
- How do people learn about opportunities to share their input on where they live, work, or play?
- What's the ideal timeline for community engagement?
- How do we shift away from a transactional approach completely?
Read more on how LSA's framework engagement gives community members more agency in the decisions that impact their lives.

Tucson Norte-Sur initiative kicks off, exploring future equitable high capacity transit for Tucson
Tucson Norte-Sur is a plan that works with Tucson communities to identify opportunities for equitable reinvestment and access along a future 15-mile long North-South High Capacity Transit (HCT) corridor connecting Tucson Mall on the northside to downtown Tucson and to the Tucson Airport on the southside. The City of Tucson seeks to understand the community's vision for the future of this corridor and ensure that new development reflects the culture, community, and sense of place found in the neighborhoods along the corridor.
Living Streets Alliance supports this project's community engagement, starting with three open houses later this month. Log onto the project website to learn more and find the workshop details in the events section below.

Bolstering bike skills and confidence
As one many components of our Safe Routes to School programming in partnership with the City of Tucson, eight students from Los Amigos Tech Academy are participating in a Youth Earn-a-Bike course at BICAS (Bicycle Inter Community Art & Salvage) this spring. Through these courses, youth learn basic bike mechanics, practice problem-solving skills, and gain self-confidence. Best of all, they end up with a bike to take home that they've built themselves!
Find out more about the program below and if you know a 9-13 year old person who's looking for something to do over spring break, check out their Spring Break Youth Earn-a-Bike series.

Calling all volunteers: Cyclovia needs you!
Cyclovia is just 2.5 weeks away and volunteer opportunities abound. Whether you're an individual or have a group of friends that you'd like to volunteer with, get involved with Cyclovia. Here are three ways to volunteer:
1. Volunteer as an individual during the event
Sing up for a 4-hour shift helping manage a neighborhood intersection or leading others as a Super Volunteer. You'll still have half the day to get out an enjoy the route before or after your shift.
2. Help with neighborhood outreach on March 19th
On March 19th we'll be going door to door along the route, hanging fliers on doors to let folks know about Cyclovia and invite them to join in the event. Meet us at 9 AM for two hours of walking and flyering on a beautiful March morning. Click below to RSVP.
3. Organize a group of friends to volunteer during the event + help keep major intersections safe
With thousands of people flowing through the route it's easy to lose track of time and space. Group Intersection Volunteers help ensure that no one rolls into intersections where cars are crossing the route. It's great visibility for your church group, rotary club, sorority/fraternity, etc. Click below to learn more and sign up.

A lot of people don't know why Living Streets Alliance exists. They may see us outside doing outreach or at Cyclovia, but they don't yet know how their experience in the streets connects to decision-making. The story of Living Streets Alliance is your story and what you believe streets should look like. Help us tell the story by sharing your own experience.
Please contact us with a photo of you or your favorite street and your 1-sentence reason for support by March 11th.
We're excited to hear from you and include you on this exciting project!

“The value of streets is public space, but not just a way to get from A to B. Complete Streets is not just about efficient transportation, but also about cultivating the type of place where people are out and about connecting to each other.” Watch the full video.
