City of Tucson exploring Vision Zero: Could it work?

At their May 3rd Study Session Tucson Mayor & City Council discussed the value in becoming part of the Vision Zero Network as a way to address the growing number of serious crashes and fatalities on Tucson’s roadways. Vision Zero is a framework and approach that has proven successful in other countries, but has yet to see similar results here in the U.S. The key: a city’s commitment to it can’t be watered down in policy or in practice. Here at Living Streets Alliance we’ve been advocating for many elements of Vision Zero over the years, drawing attention to the needless loss of life on our streets on World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Traffic Violence, pushing for Complete Streets policies and practices that prioritize safety over speed, and pushing for humanizing language that shifts our thinking (“crash” not “accident”).

The new Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) federal grant program is expected to be officially unveiled any day now as part of the recently passed national Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It will include $1 Billion/year for Vision Zero planning and implementation. Find out what tactics Vision Zero employs and what measures will lead us to success here in Tucson.

Living Streets Alliance is part of the team helping to get the word out about CAAP through creative collaborations and nontraditional engagement strategies. Find out more about what that looks like and sign up for the first public workshop happening later this month in the Events section below.

Share your feedback on 5th/6th Street redesign

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility has started early planning on a project to improve 6th Street from Campbell Ave to Country Club Rd and 5th Street from Country Club Rd to Wilmot Rd. At LSA, we're interested in Option B to reduce the number of car lanes and add a bike lane to calm traffic and make the street safer for people commuting or in the neighborhood.
