Start the School Year with Safe Routes to School

Does seeing your child walk along a line of hot cars spewing emissions make you worry about their lungs? Are you concerned with how little time your kids spend outside each day? Do you worry about the safety risks associated with all the car traffic around the school?

It doesn't have to be this way! We partner with schools and empower families to opt out of the endless car lines, learn how to travel in their neighborhoods safely, gets their kids moving outside, and can even teach kids all about how a bike works. Our Safe Routes to Schools programs help schools and families find creative ways to get kids to school, safely!

Riders & Walkers Presentations

The Riders & Walkers presentations provide fun and age-appropriate activities for 3rd and 4th graders to start thinking about transportation. These activities get kids outside and help them to think critically about their neighborhood and how they feel about walking or riding bikes around. Riders & Walkers was developed and is delivered by Environmental Education Exchange, a local nonprofit that specializes in educating children and adults about environmental and societal issues.

Walking School Buses

It’s exactly what it sounds like. A group of kids walk to school together, accompanied by adults. Planning and coordination are necessary in order to establish and keep up a Walking School Bus. LSA works with families and school staff to set up a Walking School Bus that is safe and fun for students. We have plenty of resources to help you get started!

Mobile Bike Repairs

We host free bike repair clinics at schools and community centers throughout the year, and we're excited to get even busier helping fix up bikes to get ready for better cycling weather. The majority of our Mobile Bike Repairs, though, happen during the school year, and we bring them right to the schools! These repairs are made possible through the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility. Stay tuned for a Mobile Bike Repair coming to a school near you, or even request one!

After School Bike Clubs

Our bike clubs at Pueblo Gardens PreK-8, Mission View Elementary, and the John Valenzuela Youth Center offer a fun and safe way for kids to get on bikes with their friends after school. Bike clubs are inclusive and are great for kids to build up their confidence and endurance. The bike routes start small and by the end of the semester, the club is able to go on longer rides to extra special destinations!

Living Streets Alliance is proud to make these Safe Routes to Schools Tucson programs possible for the K-12 families in our communities. When kids get outside and move their bodies, whether that’s on a walk, a bike, a scooter, or another way, they are getting out a lot of pent-up energy and soaking in the experience of the place they call home.

We are here to answer your questions, schedule a Mobile Bike Repair at your school, library, or community center, to bring a safety presentation to your school, or help you start your own walking school bus!  Get in touch with us at saferoutes@livingstreetsalliance.org or visit our website saferoutestucson.org to learn more!

Here’s to a great school year!

These programs are made possible by Arizona Complete Health and funding from National Safe Routes to Schools partnership.

Thank you for helping make Safe Routes to Schools possible!
